From our Superintendent: LHS graduation update

Dear Liberty School Family,

As graduation nears, I join the Class of 2020 and their families in disappointment that COVID-19 interrupted their senior year and caused the cancellation of so many important events. It has not been fair.

Please know that everyone here in the Liberty Central School District has been working hard to make sure that our graduating seniors are celebrated. As soon as it became clear that New York State’s coronavirus safety protocols would make it impossible to hold a traditional June commencement, an LHS Graduation Committee made up of students, teachers, parents and administrators has been at work planning an alternative.

After many hours of meetings and collaboration, Liberty High School Principal Derek Adams  shared the Committee’s proposal for the 2020 Virtual Graduation with me. I approved this event for our seniors. I know it is not the graduation we envisioned, but it was planned with tremendous love for our students.

I do not know what the coming months will bring and if current restrictions on gatherings will be lifted. However, if it becomes possible to safely gather the Class of 2020 and their families, while adhering to the Governor’s orders, we will host an additional live graduation event.

The Virtual Graduation will take place as scheduled and we hope it creates special memories for all our families. Meanwhile, Mr. Adams and the Graduation Committee will begin planning for a live graduation celebration which will take place as soon as we have the opportunity.

I miss our students, and it would be wonderful to see our seniors together again.

With Liberty Pride,

Dr. Augustine E. Tornatore
Superintendent of Schools
