Administrative changes announced

Interim Superintendent Carol Napolitano has announced several changes in the administration of the Liberty Central School District effective on July 1, 2018. Mrs. Valarie Karas has been appointed to the position of Assistant Superintendent of Schools. Mr. Patrick Sullivan, the current Assistant Director of Pupil Personnel Services, has been appointed to the position of Middle School Assistant Principal. Mr. Richard Schacher, currently the Middle School Assistant Principal, has chosen to move into a music teaching position at Liberty.

Even though they will officially start their assignments effective July 1, Mrs. Karas will be working with Dr. Augustine Tornatore, who was appointed recently as the new Superintendent of Schools. Mr. Sullivan will continue to work with Mr. Andy Cameron, the newly appointed Middle School Principal, and Mr. Jack Strassman, current High School Principal.

Ms. Shawn Davis, currently High School Assistant Principal, has accepted a job as the Principal for Stamford Central School District. Mr. Rob Knuschke, the newly appointed High School Principal and Ms. Heather Cheh, a High School Assistant Principal, will monitor the pulse of the school during the rest of this year to determine if there is a the need for an additional administrator at the high school.

Biography for Ms. Valerie Karas:

Mrs. Valarie Karas has held several administrative positions within the Ballston Spa Central School District including principal, Coordinator of Common Core Standards, and Director of Elementary Curriculum and Instruction. Prior to her work in Ballston Spa, she was a teacher and literacy coach for the City School District of Albany.

Mrs. Karas holds a bachelor’s degree from Russell Sage College, master’s from Sage Graduate School, and advanced certificates from Hofstra University and the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. She is currently completing her doctoral work with the Department of Literacy Teaching and Learning at the University at Albany.

She said that her research about the Liberty schools, and current school leaders motivated her to seek the Assistant Superintendent position. Mrs. Karas has expressed that she is inspired by “Liberty Pride” and is honored to become a member of the Liberty team.
