Practicing Scales and Rudiments
When practicing scales always say what is in the key sign before you play a scale. If you play it perfectly the first time, then that is your license to go to the next scale. If you make a mistake then the "Three Time Rule" applies.
Drummers should practice rudiments with the "1 MINUTE RULE". When you can play a rudiment for 1 minute without messing up at a steady speed, then you have earned the license to go faster.
You'll find that if you practice this way, your skills will develop at a more rapid pace and you will be much more likely to "catch the fish"!
When practicing your chromatic scales and paradiddles (drummers) practice them slowly and accurately. For the chromatic scale - when you can do it 3 times accurately, then you have earned your license to go faster. With the paradiddles and double paradiddles, when you can go 1 minute without messing up at a steady speed, then you have earned a license to go faster.
