Band Provides:
Opportunities to enjoy varied kinds of musical experiences by learning to express the language of music through playing a musical instrument.
Opportunities to represent the school in public concerts and other public related functions.
A chance to experience individual improvement and refinement of one's musical ability through weekly lessons, solo recitals, solo festivals, small ensembles and county sponsored groups.
An understanding of the democratic process through self imposed discipline and individual contribution to a cooperative effort.
Course Requirements:
Each student is required to attend every rehearsal in order to keep with the new ideas presented, and to insure the cohesiveness of the large group.
Each student is required to attend one lesson a week of which a rotating schedule is posted each week. Generally the student's lesson day will remain the same each week but the time will rotate so that the student will be pulled out the same time once every 7 or 8 weeks. Lesson schedules are posted on the bulletin board outside the band room as well as distributed to each teacher.
In order to insure maximum use of rehearsal time, students must be on time. When students arrive they should take their instruments out, take their assigned seat, and begin to warm-up on instrument.
Students are required to attend all performances on time & in concert dress (unless stated otherwise).
Concert dress is as follows:
Boys - Black dress pants, white band shirt, dress shoes.
Girls - Black dress/skirt/pants, white band shirt, dress shoes.
Grading is based on responsibility, preparation, attitude, and technical elements of music necessary for performing on one's instrument.
Responsibilities:
Practicing a minimum of 180 minutes/week on assignments. This is 25-30 minutes/day
Attending lessons and all rehearsals on time.
Bringing instrument, book and band music to band and lessons
Bringing practice slips signed and filled out to lessons.
Returning permission slips signed and filled out to lessons/band
Informing Mr. Siegel if there is a schedule conflict with the lesson or band (i.e. test, lunch, assembly program, etc.) before the lesson or band so that rescheduling can occur.
***If a student does not come to their lesson without informing Mr. Siegel of a conflict it will be referred to as “cutting class” as per the student handbook and students will face the following consequences:
First offense - warning Second offense - Lunch detention
Third offense - Lunch detention/grade affected. Fourth offense - face elimination from band
8. Having an instrument that is in working condition with all necessary supplies.
Letting Mr. Siegel know if instrument is in need of repair as soon as possible.
Reed players should have 5 working reeds in playing condition at all times
Brass instruments should be cleaned at least once/month.
d. Percussion students should maintain percussion instruments in band room.
Attitude:
Having a positive attitude in lessons and band.
Being courteous to, respectful to, and cooperative with the teacher and students involved. This means A VOICE LEVEL OF Zero while the teacher is instructing!
Asking questions when something is not understood.
Preparation:
Preparing assignment written on the weekly practice slip at least 25-30 minutes per day.
Scales/Rudiments
Lesson book assignment
Solo (if applicable)
New notes
New term
Preparing band music for band rehearsal as assigned.
Elements of music
Tone Quality - control/focus, breath support/stick control, projection, embouchure/grip.
Accuracy - Notes and rhythms - fingerings, steadiness, counting, beat, pulse
Scales or rudiments - finger patterns/rhythm patterns
Playing position and posture
Technique - Dexterity, facility, flexibility, articulation
Phrasing - playing in musical sentences
Intonation - Listening and playing in tune
Tempo - Knowledge of speed of the music
Dynamics - The loudness or softness of the music
Basic rules and regulations
ABSOLUTELY NO GUM CHEWING IN THE BAND ROOM.
2. Listen attentively at rehearsals - WHEN MUSIC STOPS THERE SHOULD BE NO TALKING - We can't communicate if your not listening.
3. Watch the conductor at all times We can't communicate if your not watching.
CONCENTRATE AND FOCUS AT ALL TIMES!
