Middle School Art Classes
Fifth Grade
In the fifth grade students work on their drawing skills. The curriculum is based on Betty Edwards', “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain”, but I have adjusted the lessons so that they are appropriate for fifth graders. Drawing is the center of the Visual Arts. Thus I feel the time spent on drawing increases their ability and confidence and will help them throughout their art career .
Sixth Grade
In the sixth grade students learn about different types of art created worldwide and the Art History of different areas of the world. When we study European Art, students learn about artists seeing examples of work created by these artists, as well as the social situation that helped to create the era. Students then do projects that reflect the artwork from the areas they studied, using clay, glazing, pariscraft, paint, drawing, carving, and printing.
Seventh Grade
The emphasis in the seventh grade is on three dimensional work. Students learn to represent three dimensions through two point perspective and they create structures using this knowledge. Students also learn how to work with clay, both hand building and wheel throwing. Students also do an interdisciplinary puppet project.
Student involvement
Middle school art students have been involved with local area art shows at the Catskill Art Society and the Liberty Art Museum. Our students work has also been displayed in the Albany art museum as well as the Albany Government Mall . Students have worked independently with my support on New York State Portfolio projects. Our students work have always been in the highest category rating in Portfolio project. Middle School art students have won competitions and first place awards in various local and state competitions.
