This year, students taking Living Environment at Liberty High School are raising Brown Trout and Largemouth Bass.  This project is possible thanks to a grant from the Catskill Watershed Corporation, as well as the generous support of the Liberty Agway and Pet Center.

Since two species of fish are being raised in two separate 55 gallon tanks, students will have the chance to learn about the different requirements for Largemouth Bass and Brown Trout.  These requirements were immediately evident, as the bass tank is kept around 75 degrees F and the trout tank is chilled to 54 degrees F and needs to be insulated.  Students will also learn other topics thanks to this hands-on study, such as:

*the interactions of organisms in a community
*the steps of the Nitrogen Cycle
*abiotic and biotic factors that effect fish species
*limiting factors and range of tolerance for Trout and Bass
*correct methods of chemical testing for accuracy
*how temperature affects dissolved oxygen in water
Brown Trout are a non-native species of trout brought to NY from Europe in the 1880's.  In fact, Brook Trout are the only native species of trout to the streams of Sullivan County, NY.
BROWN TROUT
(Salmo trutta)
Largemouth Bass
(Micropterus salmoides)
