III. What to Bring to Class
The student will bring his or her own textbook, notebook with blank paper, a pen or pencil and calculator to class each day. The student will also bring any other equipment as requested by the teacher. The student also will have any assigned homework ready to be checked or collected. These will be ready by the time attendance has been taken. This is part of class participation.
IV. Calculators
The New York State Regents has mandated that a calculator must be provided for all Regents math exams. For this reason it is strongly recommended that every student buy a “scientific” calculator. These calculators can be purchased for between $10 and $15 at many stores. They do more than just the for basic operations. Make sure the calculator you buy has a fraction key. Students will be responsible for knowing how their calculator operates.
V. Notebooks and Notes
The student will have a separate, loose-leaf notebook for math class. It will contain sheets of blank, standard-size, lined paper for notes and other work. The notebook should always be kept up-to-date and ready to be checked at any time. This is part of class participation.
The notebook will be divided into the following sections:
A. Notes
All explanations and examples as presented in class will be included in the notes. The date the notes are given will be placed in left-hand margin. Only notes directly pertaining to the subject will be found in the notes section. When a student is absent, they must copy the notes from another student. All notes will be legible and easy to read by the students and the teacher.
B. Homework
All homework assignments will be included in this section in the order they are assigned. Each homework will have the proper heading and will include the assignment number, pages and problems.
C. Tests and Quizzes
All quizzes and tests will be included in this section in the order they were given.
VI. Homework
Homework may be assigned every night. The student is expected to read the pages the homework is based on carefully. The student is expected to try ALL problems. All problems should show the correct set up, work and solution. The complete, correct answer should be circled. The student should have the homework paper ready to be checked at the start of each period. Each homework will have the following heading:
HW # Student name
Assignment Period
Date
The teacher will check the homework for completeness and may collect it to correct it. The teacher may review all problems or only specific ones. The student should be ready to ask and answer questions on the homework. This is part of class participation.
VII. Tests and Quizzes
Tests usually are given at the end of a topic or chapter. They are meant to take an entire period to complete. A cumulative quarterly test will be given near the end of each of the first three quarters. These tests will count twice. Test must always be made up if they are missed.
Quizzes can be given at any time and may or may not be announced. They are meant to take about 15 minutes to complete. The student may or may not be asked to make up a quiz depending on the number of quizzes they have missed. Any quiz not made-up will be counted as a 0.
VIII. Missed Work and Make Up
The student will have as many days to turn in missed assignments as the number of days they were absent. Exceptions will be made for lengthy absences. The student or parent should arrange to get the work ahead of time when they know and absence will occur. The teacher also will provide work during a lengthy absence when it is requested.
IX. Plagiarism and Cheating
Every student is expected to do his or her own work at all times. Copying someone else's work at presenting it as you own is plagiarism. Allowing someone to copy your work is cheating. The minimum penalty for either of these actions will be a 0 on the work in question. This 0 cannot be changed in any way. Parents and administration will be notified.
X. Grading
A. Tests 50%
B. Quizzes 30%
C. Homework 10%
D. Participation and Notebook 10%
The mean of all the student's tests will be calculated and this will account for 50% of the grade.
The lowest grade will be dropped. The mean of the quizzes will be calculated and will account for 30% of the grade.
At the end of the marking period a class participation grade will be assigned. A student who is not participating will be warned. A notebook check at any time during the marking period may be included in this grade. This will account for 10% of the grade.
The student is expected to complete every homework assignment. A missing assignment will count as a 0. An incomplete assignment will count as 50. A completed assignment will count as 100. The lowest HW grade will be dropped. The mean of the homework assignments will be calculated and will account for 10% of the grade.
