Types of "wares"
Freeware
These are programs that you can download and use for free as long as you like. Most are small utilities for very specific purposes. Some authors ask that you Email them or send a post card to say that you are using the program. Some programs are a "labor of love" and the author is glad to accept donations. Other programs are a "lite" version of a commercial program that is an enticement to buy the full commercial version. All of thes eporgrams are used at your own risk and "as is". Some hav extensive on-line communities for support but few are supported by the author.
Shareware
The programs are free to download and use for a specific periof of time. Most are full, working version without limitations. Some are "limited" in some way; add a link to the author's web site, write DEMO on your work, disbale saving or other key features. Some authors simply trust you to pay or stop using the software after the trial period. Others have a way of disbling the software completely after the trial period has expired. Other authors will allow you to continue to use the program as long as you want as long as you do not distribute it for profit. many of these programs rival their commercial counterparts and have become "standards".
Demos
These programs are versions of commercial programs that the authors expect you to pay for in the futire. Many of the comments made about shareware apply here. However, these programs are always time limited or severely crippled in some way. They do allow you to try before you buy and may have limited support to help you make your decision.
Commercial
These are programs that you can download on-line or buy CD boxed versions either on-line or ina retail store. The price vary from $30 to $300 or more. They are usually full-featured and will perform as advertised. This does NOT mean they will always be to your liking or will have now flaws or "bugs". Support can vary greatly from easily accessible and knowledgable to spotty and less than helpful. It is best to try a demo if available, ask others who have used the program or read reviews in reliable magazine or on-line. DO YOUR HOMEWORK! A shareware program may be cheaper and contain most of the features you need. Macromedia Dreamweaver is a wonderful program and an industry standard but it may be more than you need. Adobe Photoshop will edit your images in a hundred different ways but costs a fortune.
