Student- Faculty-Staff Chorus
By Priscilla Brown
The one and only Jamie Saucier recently began leading the student- faculty-staff chorus. It's being held in the chorus room on every third Tuesday. Several teachers and staff attended, including Mrs. Grabowski, Mrs. Clark, Mrs. Crescitelli, Ms. Dellapenta, Ms. Page from the Middle School, Mr. Clarke the Superintendent, and Mr. Strassman will be joining as well. Other teachers will be joining too, but couldn't make the first session due to other meetings held that night. Mrs. Aberman, Mrs. Sutherland, and Mrs. Harness plan to join. Because several teachers, students, and faculty attended the first session Mr. Saucier is considering other people outside the school to be joining too, such as alumni, parents, and whoever can carry a tune!
Ten students showed up in the first session leading section rehearsals. Mr. Saucier said, “This is the opportunity for students to teach their teachers.”
Mr. Saucier said that he thought up the idea for the chorus over the summer.
“I think it's important for students to see their teachers in a different light, not only as the leader of the classroom, but as regular human beings,” said Mr. Saucier.
Oliver King
By Priscilla Brown
You may have seen him around the school and don't know who is, but in case you're wondering, it's Oliver King. He comes to the Liberty High School because it was agreed after speaking to the administration that the students at Liberty High could use more information about reproductive health, making healthy choices, and sex in dating relationships. He is here every Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. during all four-lunch periods. Working closely with health teachers and guidance counselors, he brings factual information to teenagers.
Teen Link To Community also known as TLC, is who he works for and is located in Monticello at 33 Lakewood Ave. Mr. King was able to do all this for the students with help by Liz Huntington who is the administrator of the program and they work very closely together to bring the best programming to students as well as receiving funding from the New York State Department of Health through the parent organization called Maternal-Infant Services Network of Orange, Sullivan and Ulster Counties.
For all who do know Mr. King, the reason he personally came to this high school is because he has been working with the many students in community recreational programs and many of the students felt that they needed to have this information in school. He offers a package called the Real Deal, which is a four-part program done in conjunction with Aids Related Community Services (ARCS), Rape Intervention Services and Education (RAPE), the BOCES teen parenting program, and TLC.
“It's difficult for us to personally track the effectiveness of our effort, but according to the latest statistics from the Department of Health, the teen pregnancy rate is dropping, more teenagers are waiting to engage in sexual activity, and those who choose to be sexually active are using the latest methods of protection,” he said with excitement. “Your sexual health is one of the most important and exciting aspects of your life and once you have the correct information it will be easier to make the right choices for yourself,” said by the infamous Oliver King.

By Angelee Santillo
Interested in the marine ecosystem? Planning on pursuing a career in marine biology? Need something fun to do for Spring Break 2006? If so, then attending the Marine Ecology field trip to Key Largo, Florida would be a smart thing to do.
The Coordinator of the Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES Center for Environmental Education, Dorna L. Schroeter, is organizing the trip. Schroeter is an advanced scuba diver and has been running trips to Key Largo since 1989. The trip is an educational experience, is offered to any High School student and any level teacher, and will go on during Spring Break 2006.
The classes are instructed by marine biologists from various organizations, as well as trip chaperones. The cost is approximately $1600 including room and board (Sunset Cove Resort, Key Largo), all program components, and ground transportation in Florida. Airfare is not included, and the final cost is determined by the total number of people participating. Pentagram: Good or Evil?
By Carissa Ruiz
Beliefs, friends, family, government, religion. The reality is that everyone needs to believe in something: even something unnatural or unseen. Sometimes symbols help us to believe in our religions as well as one's self. The pentagram. Maybe you've seen it, maybe you haven't. It's around people's necks, on their clothes, disguised in an unnoticeable way so that even the wearer might not realize they are wearing it. It's a five-point star encased in a circle, and while some people believe it represents everything evil, others believe it has protection powers. So what's the truth? The truth of a belief that you hold in a symbol is simply what you believe, but here's some background information to help decipher the myth.
It has been said that four of the five points of the pentagram are meant to represent the four sacred elements: Air, which is represented by the upper left hand point of the star, and stands for Intelligence and the Arts; Fire, which is represented by the lower right hand point of the star, and stands for Courage and Daring; Water, which is represented by the upper right hand point of the star, and stands for Emotions and Intuition; and Earth, which is represented by the lower left hand point of the star, and stands for Stability and Physical Endurance, with the fifth point representing spirit, signified by the topmost point of the star, and is symbolic of Deity the Divine. The circle surrounding the star is to symbolize sacred space, where the spirit controls the four elements.
The history of the pentagram dates back to 3500BC where it's found on pottery along with more of the earliest known developments of the written word. Skip ahead to the Druids and you have the symbol of a Godhead, farther ahead to the early Christians and you have the Five Wounds of Christ, and from then until medieval times it wasn't used so much by the Christians anymore. Then comes the Inquisition, when all beliefs about everything changed;: the pentagram was seen as a Goat's Head, aka. Satan, and the pagans were persecuted for worshiping the being of all evil. In the 1940's Gerald Gardner adopted the upside down pentagram for neo-pagan rituals, also known as Wicca, and in the 1960's it became a strong symbol again for the popular interests in the witchcraft and the history it represented.
When you get down to it, there are stereotypical people who will still believe the pentagram is evil, open-minded people who won't choose to believe either story but like to hear the history anyway, and then those that truly believe that the Pentagram holds some protection powers of its own. This article is not meant to change your beliefs, but simply inform you on a symbol that's been seen a lot in these open-minded times of ours with a lot of different ideas of it's meaning. It will always come down to a person's belief, and nothing more. The pentagram has been a controversial issue for many and an inspiration for many more, here was just a briefing of its story.
