DelSignore Masters Musical
By Sam Jardine
As most people already know, in April, a group of very hard-working and talented students will be performing Frank Wildhorn's Jekyll & Hyde. Jekyll & Hyde is a story that deals with the two conflicting natures of man, good and evil. The show is full of amazing solos as well as awesome group numbers. The cast and crew are very lucky to be working with Assistant Principal Fran DelSignore. Many students know her as just an administrator, someone who asks to see their trackers, and someone who enforces the rules at Liberty Central High School. So how could she be directing a musical? Well it just so happens that this isn't her first time.
Ms. DelSignore has been doing theater for 15 years now, singing professionally for 10 years and playing piano since college. She developed a district wide theater program in her first school where elementary, middle, and high school students had their own shows. The shows were so outstanding that the district received a brand new lighting and sound system. One of her students even became the assistant lighting director for The Lion King on Broadway. Pretty impressive coming from a woman who wasn't able to take part in shows when she was in high school. Her high school didn't have any theater programs, so if you weren't in a sport there wasn't anything for you to do. Thankfully here in Liberty, you can take part in sports and theater at the same time.
There are many benefits of being involved in the Performing Arts in high school. Ms. DelSignore believes that students will develop life-long bonds with each other, as well as giving them confidence in every day life. Sometimes you'll find yourself bonding with people you might not otherwise be talking to while you're in the show, broadening your horizons for new friendships.
“It's a chance to be really successful and show yourself that you haven't even begun to reach your full potential,” said Ms. DelSignore.
There have been continuous efforts to promote Jekyll & Hyde such as giving out Mardi Gras beads to students who could answer trivia questions about the show. After hearing some of the questions, many students wanted to know more about the show, and were very excited to see it. Soon the cast will be giving out Hawaiian Leis for another trivia game and they are also working on organizing a school dance. The cast will be doing a teaser for Referral-Free students and another one for other local schools.
“I believe people will leave saying that they thought the students were professionals. And the students in our school will say it's the best thing they've ever seen,” said Ms. DelSignore about the show.
To decide for yourself, come and see Jekyll & Hyde on April 8th, 9th, 15th & 16th at Liberty Central High School. Tickets are $5 for Children and $7 for Adults. For this show there will be reserved seating. Tickets will also be sold online at the school website www.libertyk12.org.
What You Don't Know About Gangs
by Darrin Wallace
Some people don't really know what a gang really is. Once they hear that you are in a gang people get very scared of you and think of you as a murderer or a person off the edge ready to put a bullet in someone. I lived in New Mexico for almost a year and I made friends with different gang members. However, in New Mexico being in a gang doesn't really bother that many people that live there because there are so many gangs that live there. Most of the people that I met asked me if I was in any gang. They were surprised that I wasn't in a gang.
There are many gangs that exist in this world, including popular gangs such as the Bloods and the Crips. You can determine who belongs to these types of gangs because of the colors they represent, Ox Blood red for the bloods color and Blue for the Crips color. These gangs have been at war for years at a time. Since these gangs had such an impact on society pieces of these groups gave birth to many other and more dangerous gangs. Some I encountered were North Side Locs, South Side Locs, Eastside Locs, and Westside Locs. These gangs flourish in New Mexico and some are considered dangerous.
Many gangs claim territory. In New Mexico these territories are scattered in the North Valley, South Valley, East Valley and the West Valley. People who are not recognized in these hoods are considered a target. If you are wearing rival gang colors in gang territory you might encounters problems. Many innocent people and tourists die because of not knowing that there are walking around in gang territory.
They see the color that there wearing and consider you in a rival gang. You're most likely to get shot in west valley wearing a red, brown or orange shirt, but you won't get bothered in the north valley. Usually those people who get hurt have innocently worn the wrong color in the wrong neighborhood.
You may ask yourself why do people join a gang in the first place? Many people have different reasons why they join a gang. It could be because they want to feel protected or others just want to feel belonged and in some cases people are born into being in a gang. If your parents are gang members most likely you will be in a gang too. The newer generation of gang influence is rap music and rap videos Kids see these rappers throwing up their bandana and kids think that's cool and they want to be in a gang, but they don't really know what their getting into. Being in a gang is like a brotherhood. If one goes down you all go down. Sometimes in some situations when one takes the fall for a crime the others deny any ties towards you or may even snitch on you to the police to protect themselves. Being a snitch in a gang will get you a shorter lifespan and your life would be threatened as well as the lives of the ones you love and others associated with you.
To be into a gang you have got to be “ranked in” or “jumped in”. This is when people in the gang you want to get in will beat you up for a certain amount of time. In some cases you can't even fight back. In others gangs to be ranked in you might have to do some “dirty business” This is when your ordered to do massive crimes to build up your rep. Such crimes would be dealing drugs, robbery, fighting, even murder and in some cases you might have to defend your territory from rival gangs. People think its easy to join a gang but its not your life is threaten everyday. And once you're in a gang you're in they're for life and when I say for life that's what its means you give them your life.
To get ranked out a gang is much worse than getting ranked in. In most cases people who want out of a gang get shot three times in their chest, if you survive the shots you're out, but nine times out of ten, most people die. If your life really meant something to you it would be wise not to join a gang because the so called “friends” that you're gangbanging with just might be the ones that will send you to a life in prison or no life at all.
Don't Be a Statistic
by Danielle Hinton
There is a statistic in life that we all feel is worth fighting for, a statistic that we want to overcome and be bigger than. The statistic I'm fighting against is teenage pregnancy in not only my school but also schools across America. The rate of high school dropouts due to pregnancy for both males and females is soaring through the roof. We cannot stop young ladies from becoming pregnant whether they're ready or not but we all can put our best foot forward to prepare the young population for this part of their lives.
Let's be honest most, not all, students who become pregnant or have impregnated someone did not see it coming and do not have any sort of plan or clue as to what to do. Think about it, whenever you see on television a young lady telling their boyfriend or significant other that they're are pregnant and the child belongs to them, they always say: “Well what are you going to do about it?” as if it only takes one person to make new life. And when looking at it, usually the woman has to take on this obstacle in life solo. They could end up with nothing; no education, no job, no support from family and ultimately no hope for their lives. We need to prevent this.
In my school I would like to propose a new idea , a small idea that can make a world of a difference. A support group specifically for pregnant, possibly pregnant, or females who wish to be pregnant. The group would also welcome the men of these pregnant ladies and support for the families. It is important that these girls have as much support as possibly through this life changing hindrance. They also need education not only in school but also in real life experiences. They need to know how to pay bills, grocery shop, find a job and continue their high school education. Some mothers don't even know the basics like changing, feeding, bathing, and even holding a baby properly. They need help from anyone who cares.
In my school we don't have any sort of support group, but our guidance department does refer these young ladies to Teen Parenting a program by BOCES. The program connects teens with mentors that help them make the kind of decisions that suit them best. However some of these groups around the Sullivan County area are church affiliated, so the idea of terminating the pregnancy would most likely be out of the question, even though it just may be what's best for them. The area needs a place for everyone from any school to go to regardless of their religious, ethnic, or heritage beliefs.
These children are America's future. They will be the ones cleaning up after their parent's generation pass into the next life. Don't you think they deserve every opportunity to become wonderful people that can help our world during the times when it matters most? Shouldn't they be exposed to a brighter world from birth and all throughout life, instead of a life of struggle and hopelessness due to something as simple as being the child of parents who are uneducated and unprepared? I do, and I think the mothers of our country's future agree too.
