The Mild Intellect
Teenagers
By Ashley Argent
Being a teenager has the reputation of being the most carefree time of ones life, but sometimes adults over-estimate teenagers.
Being a teenager in this century means having quite a few responsibilities. Most teenagers want cars, or own cars, so they find ways to make money, such as picking up small random jobs, or getting part-time jobs. Not only does the job give teenagers money for their cars, but also a little extra money on the side, which smart teenagers usually save for college.
Another responsibility of teenagers is getting schoolwork completed. Teachers have no problem giving students truckloads of homework, not realizing that other teachers are also giving out lots of homework, so time management is also a necessary task. Completing schoolwork is very important to the future of a child, no matter what their plans may be.
Money management is also very important to a teenager. Teenagers find it hard to lean on their parents for money when they want to go out, and most teenagers go out a lot. Working and saving are crucial to a perfect weekend, and if a teenager is smart, they will try and save up money for important things, like college or other future goals.
Perhaps the most important aspect of a teenager though, is being able to manage a whirlwind social life, between jobs, chores and for those athletic teens, practices and games. To the typical teen, having something to do constantly is very important, and most teens don't like sitting at home doing nothing. Although we do live in a town with little to offer for those under 60, teens always manage to find something to do!
Ratings Reach Tree Tops
.....By Rebecca Cuttita
Well, the WB did it again. After becoming Dawsonless at the end of last year's season, they managed to break out a new sitcom with a bit of a Creeky feel to it. The new drama, One Tree Hill, is based on two teenage boys, Lucas (Chad Michael Murray), and Nathan (James Lafferty) who seem to have nothing in common other than the hate they share for each other. This is, however, only until we discover that they share a father (Paul Johansson) who abandoned Lucas' pregnant mother (Moira Kelly) in order to retain his scholarship. He went on to meet and marry someone else, who in turn had Nathan. The two boys do everything in their power to keep their distance, but are constantly running into each other; whether on the basketball court or while fighting for the interest of Nathan's former girlfriend, Peyton (Hilarie Burton). Living in a small town, the two face constant confrontation, forcing their lives to intertwine in ways they never imagined.
Since its start in September, the shows ratings have continued to rise. It is, however, no surprise. With a gorgeous cast and a plot that somehow gives off Dawson vibes the show is sure to be a hit. Each episode is packed with endless drama dealing with everything from family and relationships to parties and basketball. Teens, especially girls, are sure to go googly-eyed at sight of Lucas and get caught up in the tangled web of drama that makes up each show.
One Tree Hill airs on the WB Tuesday at 9:00 P.M.

Dissatisfaction Dims Some Students' Dreams
......By Jared Levine
Life can at times seem a bit dragged out, especially for high school students. In a time of life when instant gratification is a main objective at all times, four years of the same halls can grow tiresome rather quickly. In fact, high school is in a sense a continuation of previous years of education, meaning that students have already dealt with the burdens of going to classes, balancing a social life, and staying health and active in their family life.
Most students aren't too fond of dealing with a work-like schedule each day, which is sometimes even more strenuous on the mind and body than a normal workday. Students don't even get paid, which is another reason why so many of them are discontent with the system.
Academically, subjects have grown more complex and intricate, and the requirements and standards seem to get higher each year, especially in New York State. While most students do plan on going to college, they are forced to really excel in the classroom in order to do so, which is a much steeper hill for some than others.
For the student who is unfazed by the daunting task of receiving his/her Regents diploma to graduate, they are faced with what can be a greater trial outside the classroom. Teenagers do have other worries besides school work. Driving, finding a job, playing a sport or instrument, having a boyfriend/girlfriend, scheduling appointments of all sorts, and something that the average teenager doesn't have time to do- relax.
Certainly, in the real world, a working adult has a long day filled with its own busy schedule s well. However, to put the same, if not greater amount of stress on a person at least ten years younger is a bit unfair. For those kids who struggle with understanding the concept of cosines and quadratic equations in math class, or grasping the notion of molar equations in chemistry, school is not only frustrating, it can become time consuming and degrading to self-esteem if something is so difficult to understand is necessary to know.
The route out that many students faced with an uphill battle is to drop out of high school and begin a career with a part time job or pursue a GED. This is highly discouraged and looked down upon and is even considered a suicide from education. Despite the efforts to decrease dropout rates by providing programs that tutor, students are not willing to make that commitment due to the amount of time and energy it occupies. And with so many important essentials to the teenager's life, if schoolwork is not number one on a priority list, it can easily be ignored, and the results don't come out pretty often.
Meeting Hillary
......By Erin Smith
At the first sight of her, the feeling was sort of surreal. Never in my life have I been so close to such an influential human being. Hillary Rodham Clinton, the former first lady and one of New York's present Senators, fills a room when she walks in. Her presence is noticed without even seeing her. After finishing lunch, Senator Clinton and Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther walked into Mr. Willy's and the hype in the room was just intensified.
My first glimpse is of a woman with a big toothy grin and that infamous hair. But then she starts to speak. Words of intense passion come flowing out. A forty-five minute unscripted speech was all it took for me to become a Hillary supporter. I was especially touched when she mentioned that Liberty High School juniors and seniors had come to hear her speech at Catskill Regional Medical Center. She spoke of the current situation of our economy. “I get so choked up every time I talk about this. I need a glass of water,” Clinton said.
Hillary Rodham Clinton is an extremely intelligent, strong woman capable of many great things. The saying “you can't tell a book by its cover” holds great truth of this woman. Hillary is a deep, meaningful book that many have yet to open.

Late Again??
....By Michael Carcamo
Students in Liberty Central School are being marked down on the sheets for illegal reasons for being late to school. The amount of students that are late to school everyday is unbelievable high. Many students have to wait on line for up to 20 minutes so that attendance can write you up a late pass to class. It's outrageous how many students come late to school. Excuses that are given include: “I overslept,”;” I was at my sister's house,”: “or I don't know”.
What can be done? Many students have a lot of things to do before they come to school there are some students that drop off their little brothers, sisters or other relatives off to school so they can get there on time, or pick up there friends to go to school. A lot of students do get up really late to school b/c they overslept. A lot of the students deserve to get illegal passes b/c they are on time to school, but they decide to smoke outside at the corner and waste time, and when the bell rings they expect to be on time and make up something, like write a note and sign their parent's name on it and hand it to attendance and expect that it can go thru attendance.
“I think this is obsessive, and it is ridiculous, and starting this month, students that are late to school will face the consequences,” stated Mrs. Couitt, school attendance officer.
Being late is an issue around here because so many students are waiting on line and by the time they get a pass there is only 10 minutes left of class. Some advice would be to be prepared and be on time to school.
Atkins Goes Bad
......By Bryan Jensen
The greatly talked about Atkins diet, best known for its low carbohydrate, high fat routine is asking that it's followers cut back on their consumption of saturated fat. Promoters of the diet say that a person following Dr. Atkins orders could do so by decreasing their intake of red meat, butter, and cheese.
According to an article from CNN.com, the director of research and education for Atkin's Nutritionals, Colette Heimowitz, is telling health professionals that only 20 percent of a dieter's calories should come from
saturated fat. In Dr. Atkins original book, released in 1972, beef, pork, lamb, and butter were all on a list of "foods you may eat liberally.” It has become a well talked about subject among dieters since the publication of his most recent book Dr. Atkin's New Diet Revolution in 1992. Atkins, who recently passed away, always maintained that people should eat other food than just red meat, but had trouble getting that message out, said the article. The change comes as new low-carb diets are gaining in popularity, with many calling for less saturated fat.
The New Look Knicks
.........By Josh Chen
In the first part of season there were nothing but boos in Madison Square Garden, as the New York Knicks were heading into another disappointing season with a record of 15 wins and 24 loses. With the loss of Latrell Sprewell to the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Knicks' season is on the brink. The coach Don Chaney was under heavy criticism with the poor job that he has done in the past two years, and he knows that his job is in danger.
Two weeks ago when Isiah Thomas took over as the new General Manager the fate of the Knicks will have a dramatic change. Isiah knows that a major roster change needs to be done. With that in mind Thomas acquired two key players: Anfernee Hardaway and Stephon Marbury from the Phoenix Suns. Thomas also fired his close friend Chaney and dozen other coaching staff, and named Lenny Wilkens as the new head coach. With this major roster changer Isiah Thomas is looking forward to turn the season around and lead the team to the playoff, which they haven't done in three years.
Lenny Wilkens is undefeated in his new job thanks to a victory over the team that fired him last spring. Stephon Marbury had 28 points and 14 assists to extend the New York Knicks' winning streak to four games with a 90-79 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Monday. During this four game winning streak the Knicks had taken on tougher teams but still maintain the ability to score and defend well. With this winning effort the Knicks are tied with Philadelphia 76ers in the 8th and the final playoff spot. Since the roster change, the Knicks have won four in a row, and selling more tickets than ever. All of a sudden the Knicks are a team that is energetic and more fun to watch, finally cheers are back in Madison Square Garden. “NBA Finals! We are going to win it all!!” said Liberty student Matt Burns just shows how excited the fans are about the new look Knicks.
