How to Stifle a Laugh.
By: Sabrina Mastrogiovanni
Have you ever been in a situation where laughing became a problem? In a fairly recent Dilbert comic, Dilbert was depicted going on a walk with a friend. His friend said that she once used to have a brother, but a piano fell on his head. In the next frame, Dilbert releases a small laugh and receives a deafening glare from his friend. He then goes on to tell Dogbert that sometimes he laughs at the wrong times. Does this particular situation mirror one of your experiences? Laughing during inappropriate times occurs at least once to everyone who owns a funny bone, and it's terribly awkward. Here are some tips to stifle in those outbursts when you need to the most.
Distract yourself. Distractions are indubitably a hook, line, and sinker. Remember studying for that social studies test and then transitioning over to TV because you heard a catchy jingle? Right, and instead of studying like a responsible student you became engulfed in the television. By counting to a certain number or reciting lyrics to your current favorite song, you can ultimately forget about whatever wants to make you laugh
Try some reverse psychology. There's nothing like feeding an inquisitive mind with some reverse psychology. If you get a package that states, “Do not open until June of next year!”, most people have more of an impending urge to immediately tear open the package than if the package didn't have that labeled statement. While you're laughing, tell yourself to keep laughing. Yes, keep laughing! You know that's utterly hilarious! In doing so, you will eventually stop laughing because of how ridiculous you're sounding. Then you'll realize whatever made you laugh really isn't worth all of that laughing.
Turn your laugh into a coughing spree. While this method may sound incredibly immature, it is nonetheless effective. Done in the correct manner, any bystander will think you're simply in a coughing fit and as long as they're not inhumane, they'll ask you if you're alright and possibly offer you a glass of some type of liquid.
Think of something sad. This method is probably the most obvious. Even so, it stands to be mentioned. If you have nothing to be sad about, even though there are plenty of things that could punch a hole through your umbrella on a rainy day, the newspaper is an ideal source. Thinking of something sad will deter your urge to laugh, simply because sad things don't normally make you laugh.
These methods are fantastic and work even better when amalgamated! Good luck on future problematic laughing endeavors!
Smoking in the girls bathroom.
By Kristen Heindel
Everyday the teenage girls who are NON smokers of placePlaceNameLiberty PlaceTypeHigh School walk into the girl's bathroom and have to deal with the actions of others. People who smoke in the bathroom are inconsiderate of their peers and should consider what the other people who don't smoke have to deal with. Because of their addiction that they brought upon themselves, the other girls have to: 1. Reek of cigarettes for the rest of the day. 2. Struggle with the secondhand smoke problems, and 3. Sometimes get wrongfully accused of being a “smoker” because they smell like cigarettes.
Since it is apparently difficult to stop the smoking altogether, there are a few things that we can do as a school to help get rid of the smoke smell. There are windows in the bathrooms that need to be opened. If we're not able to open them, we need to invest in a bathroom or hallway monitor that will be inside or outside of the bathrooms and will monitor the girls and boys who are entering and leaving the bathrooms. Education about secondhand smoke is what we need to focus on. So every time that you are about to “light up” in the bathroom, you will be made to think about all the other girls that have to come in there and inhale your cigarette. The teachers and the principals need to step it up and start doing something about this problem in our school.
Attention class of 2010, The Social Studies Confusion is Resolved.
By: Arianna Burd
Around May every year Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior students usually meet with their guidance counselor to determine the classes they will be taking next year. This year is no different, however, in the past week there is been some confusion as to next years social studies classes offered to Juniors. In years past Social Studies teachers of tenth graders who took Global History would recommend their students for either AP, Honors, or regular United States History. This year as many students, especially current Global Honors students were told that an Honors Global course would not be offered. Meaning, that all students who were recommended for AP but did not want to be in AP would have to take regular placecountry-regionUS history during their Junior Year. Ms. Argentati came into Ms. McKenna's Honors Global class this morning to clear up the confusion. The finalized plan goes as follows. Students who are sophomores this year and are recommended for honors will take honors US History their Junior year and then have the option to be recommended to take AP US History during their Senior year. Students who are recommended by their Social Studies teacher can also opt to take AP European History as an independent study their junior year. In previous years AP European History has only been offered as a class (Independent Study) to recommended seniors. To sum things up Juniors (depending on recommendation of their teachers) can take Honors US History or Regular US History, as well as an option to take AP European History as an independent study if recommended.
Elections.
By: Guadalupe Perez
It's that time of year again! Elections are coming! Do you know who you'll be voting for? Well you should think very well about your choice. Elections in schools tend to be more of a popularity contest. Should they really be that though?
A candidate should want the best for their class. They should actually have ideas of what to do. Not just any ideas though, they should be ideas that the rest of the class will also like and participate in. Representatives are also a very important choice. They are the ones who get to vote on what happens and does not happen in the school. When electing them, be careful and think, who will listen and try to voice their class' opinion in the best way possible.
Elections will be held in the cafeteria on June 6th during lunch periods so go vote for the candidate which you think will lead and represent your class in the best way.
Starting School 15 minutes Earlier!!!
By: Kristen Heindel
Starting next year, the rumor is that school is starting at 7:45a.m. Even though we will be getting out of school earlier, 7:45 is way too early to be arriving at school. Students already have problems with being tardy and if we start school earlier, there will be an even bigger tardiness problem. Plus students will be missing more of their A period class if they arrive next year at the time they do now. placeCityLiberty has had the same schedule for as long as we can remember, so why the change? I think the questions that the school wants to ask the superintendent, Michael Vanyo is, why is school starting fifteen minutes earlier? And did you consider the teachers opinion on the matter? And finally, why did you not ask the community like parents and students?
Drama
By Allie Wallgren
Drama, drama, drama… that's all you hear about in placePlaceNameLiberty PlaceTypeHigh School and it's getting a little old. I mean does it ever stop?! Students that start drama obviously have nothing else better to do. Maybe they think its fun, but it's just annoying to others around them and can get people mad. Girls who continuously talk bad about other girls and boys who talk bad about other boys are immature. People always say that if someone is always talking about you and they have nothing else to talk about then you are pretty important to them and they are obviously thinking about you! Most drama revolves around the opposite sex. Most of the time you will hear “OMG, she wants my boyfriend!” or “This guy is trying to get stuff from my girl friend.” Seriously, get over it. The person is with you, not them. Don't ruin a friendship over someone who you probably won't be with in a few weeks or even days.
Senior Elana Ehrenberg says, “Rumors play a big part in drama between friends.” She says, “Don't concern yourself with drama if it has nothing to do with you.” If there is drama with one friend leave it at that. Don't bring the rest of your friends into it. It just shows that you are even more immature than you were when you were talking about them .
Teachers hear about all the drama going on. “Sometimes from more students than others,” Mr. Hazelnis says.
Often, people who have nothing else better to do start all of this drama and the conclusion is that they need to find a hobby or something. Every friendship has drama, but sometimes it gets a little out of hand and people make it a bigger thing than it ever was. Discuss the problem like educated people would before things get to the point where you don't even want to see their faces because it disgusts you.
A Way to Protect Against Breast Cancer
By: Brianna Mir
Thousands of women suffer every year from the unfortunate reality of breast cancer. A lot of people don't understand the severity of breast cancer. They just figure that if someone has breast cancer it can just be cut right out no problem. In an ideal world that might work, but it's obvious that this is certainly not an ideal world. We all live in the harsh reality that there is no cure for cancer. No matter what part of the body the cancer is located in, death can occur if not treated properly. Although we like to mentally deny these facts, in the end, thousands of people die. It can be prevented though. There is a way. Scientists have been
working diligently to search for a cure and while they haven't found one yet, they have found a way to prevent it. Exercise, being active and just plain moving could decrease a woman's chances by 23% of getting breast cancer. Scientists are reporting that a mere 3 hours and 15 minutes of running and vigorous activity a week could help and if you're not nearly that athletic, 13 hours of walking. Scientists are now saying that the increase in physical activity can lower estrogen levels and that's the reason for irregular menstrual periods. After menopause the main reason women exercise is so that they can keep the fat off. The fat, however, is built on and so hard to keep off due to estrogen. It's believed that the exercise done as a teenager could lower the estrogen levels enough that breast cancer could either be completely avoided of at least delayed until after menopause. After a women hits menopause, the cancer tissue is easier to remove rather than before. Even if as a teenager someone didn't get in enough exercise, it's not too late. So long as they get into the habit of exercise they can greatly reduce their chances of being struck by yet another incurable disease. To all guys out there, while this may be incredibly awkward to read, it's also very important. Pass this information around to women you love of any age and there chances will be greatly reduced.
Senior Switch Day
By: Megan Eisenberg
Who doesn't love Senior Switch Day? It's pretty much a guaranteed day of mischief and trouble. This year, Senior Switch Day fell on Tuesday, May 20, 2008, which unfortunately was a half-day. Angelee Santillo and Chris Torres took over in a joint effort as the big cheese of the school, Mr. Strassman. The two dished out ridiculous referrals left and right, with offenses such as “eating all the reads in the band room.” The other two principals were taken over by Matt Arielly and Mike Dunnigan who roamed the halls as Mr. Sinacore, and Caroyln Carrier and Stephanie Soto, as Mrs. Weigand. The five Santillo's, Erica Belgard, Dana Kortright, Janine Stricko, Risa Bernthal, and Anam Choudry, described their job as “filing and making copies.” Kelsey Rourke and Brittany Austin stepped in as Mrs. Bull, and taught their class how to make paper hats. Students were told they got 50 points off their final average for not wearing them. Elana Ehrenberg attempted to fill the shoes of Mrs. McKenna with a game of jeopardy. Amanda Reyes and the rest of the lunch crew made smiley-face pizzas and peanut butter cookies.
“I like senior switch day because it gives Seniors some control.” says Junior Asia Folsom.
“And it gives us a break.” Adds Junior Kristen Heindel.
There are always a few unfortunate classes where we are forced to do actual work, but as far as most underclassmen are concerned, Senior Switch Day is something different that everyone can enjoy.
