Assistive technology MUST be considered for all students with an IEP (Indivualized Educational Plan). Students with a 504 classification MAY be considered for the use of assistive technology.
What?
It is any item, piece of equipment, or product system; whether purchased, modified, or created that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of an individual with a disability.
Where?
In the classroom first, but multiple environments must be considered as well, to address the lifeskill areas of communication, mobility, recreation, vocation, independence, and therapy/rehabilitation.
When is it considered for implementation?
At least annually, but could be considered at any time.
Why?
As a result of IDEA legislation, students with disabilities must have an equal opportunity to participate in and benefit from a school district's programs and activities.
How?
A process for considering the use of assistive technology will be set forth by the district AT team (Laurie Burke-Maier, Anne Colman, Joan Paddock, and Judy Brink) in cooperation with the Director of Student Services, Barbara Blakey.
