National Art Honor Society LogoThe inaugural group of Liberty High School National Art Honor Society members will be inducted into the organization on Thursday, December 12th at 7 p.m..

The event is being held at the Green Door Gallery and hosted by Green Door Magazine publishers Ellie and Akira Ohiso. The gallery and Green Door Headquarters are located at 34 South Main Street in Liberty. A special show featuring the Liberty NAHS artists will be on display.

Officers of the newly formed organization are Gladys Diaz, President, Brittany Almodoval, Vice President, Alyssa Bossert Piatek, Treasurer and Katarina Manzi, Secretary. Inductees include Paula Doty, David Cherapanov, Joey Maltese and Melissa Symanski and Sierra Thomas.

Liberty Art Department Chairperson Kathy Lambert established the Liberty chapter and gained accreditation this past autumn. The organization was founded by the National Art Education Association in 1978. Its purpose was (and still is) to inspire and recognize students who have shown an outstanding ability and interest in art.
Membership is based upon art scholarship, service, and character. To be eligible for membership, students must have an average of 90 or above in an advanced art class, an overall GPA of 80 or above and be in good academic standing. A minimum of 30 community service hours in the arts is also required.

“Liberty has a wealth of very talented art students,” said Lambert. “They certainly deserve to be honored for their academic and artistic success, and for all that they do in our community. We are proud to offer our students a way to delve deeper into the blossoming art offerings in our town. Their work in the arts will be greatly valued by the whole community.”

Green Door Magazine, a lifestyle magazine that focuses on the Hudson Valley. Owners Ellie and Akira Ohiso graciously agreed to host the event after a group of Liberty art students visited the gallery during the First Annual Liberty Art Department Art Walk that took place in September.

“One of the reasons we opened our space on Main Street is to create community and support our youth - who are the seeds of real change in any community,” said Editor Akira Ohiso. “We are honored to host this meaningful event and we congratulate them on their achievements.”
