With family members, coaches, faculty and administrators proudly looking on, Senior Jessica Dunnigan signed a National Letter of Intent on Tuesday, June 14th to attend Northeastern University and compete for the school’s woman’s track and field team.
Dunnigan, who is the Class of 2011’s Salutatorian, earned a part academic/part athletic scholarship to Northeastern, a NCAA Division I private college located in Boston, MA. Her brother Michael, (LHS Class of 2008) also attends the university, where he will be a junior in a five-year program for business and finance.
The signing comes on the heels of spectacular finish to the 2011 track season for Dunnigan, where she won the girls’ Division II NYSPHSAA (NYS Public High School Athletic Association) championship in the 200-meter dash for the second straight year.
In addition to her win in the 200-meter race at states, Dunnigan also finished second in the Division II 100-meter dash and 10th in the long jump. Her performances in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes positioned her to compete in the Federation race in each of these events. The Federation races include the eight best runners from both Division I (large schools) and Division II (small schools). Theses races combine competitors from NYSPHSAA as well as those from New York City, Catholic and private schools.
“We are incredibly proud
of Jessica for all that she has accomplished during her time at
Liberty,” said Athletic Director Jason Semo. “She always gives 100
percent in both the classroom and on the field and she represents
the kind of student-athletes we strive for at Liberty. I look
forward to following her achievements at Northeastern University.”
Congratulations, Jessica!
