On Friday, April 1st and Saturday April 2nd at 7 p.m., Liberty Performing Arts presents Little Shop of Horrors at the David E. Panebaker Auditorium at the Liberty High School. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens.
Little Shop of Horrors, a campy 60’s era rock-opera, chronicles the story of an unassuming flower shop worker named Seymour (Drew Maier) who discovers an exotic plant that brings fame to both Seymour and the store. In his quest to impress his crush, Audrey (Taylor Lamerand), Seymour is forced to make some unsavory choices as “Audrey II” grows into an ill-tempered carnivore that offers Seymour fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite.
Directed by teacher Emily Ford and musical direction by Tim Hamblin, other cast members include Josh Lieberman as Mr. Mushnik, Dillon Cerullo as Orin, Melanie Downing as Crystal, Sydney Goldstein as Ronnette, Amanda Bertholf as Chiffon and Chris Lockwood and Conor Siegel as Audrey II. The Doo-Wop Group Singers are: Cherylyn Grisafe, Gwen Nieves, Nikole Snyder, Jessica Watson and Cassondra Velazquez. Rounding out the crew is pit-band director Dan McConnell, set design by Mike Diehl, costume and prop master Laurie Burke-Maier and lighting and sound by Kathy Lambert.
Created by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman, Little Shop of Horrors was made into a small budget comedy horror film in 1960 by Roger Corman, and revived as one of the longest running Off-Broadway shows of all time. It was then remade in 1986 as a feature film starring Rick Moranis and Steve Martin.
The combination of wry humor and familiar songs promises to make Little Shop of Horrors an energy-filled entertaining evening! For more information, please contact Tim Hamblin at thamblin@libertyk12.org.
