Promoting Student Success

Liberty Central School District offers a kindergarten-12th grade educational program designed to promote the academic success and personal development of all students. The district is dedicated to preparing students to meet the rigorous demands of state and local academic standards and the needs of future employers. Equally important, we are focused on addressing the needs of the “whole child” so that our students go on to become caring, contributing members of society.

Curriculum Maps

A map is an important tool for keeping you and your family on track when taking a long road trip. Likewise, on the long road to a high school diploma, "curriculum maps" are an equally important tool, helping teachers navigate the twists and turns of curriculum, covering the appropriate content while making smooth connections from one grade level to the next.

Throughout the Liberty School District, teachers and administrators have developed logical and efficient "maps" of what will be taught in core subject areas, at each grade level, at generally consistent times in each school year. Learn More

New York State Testing

General Information about the New York State Testing Program

It is the New York State Education Department's responsibility to set student learning expectations (standards) for what all students should know and be able to do as a result of skilled instruction. It is the responsibility of each local school district to develop curricula based on these NYS Learning Standards, select textbooks and instructional materials, develop pacing charts for learning (scope and sequence), and provide professional development for staff to ensure that all students have access to instruction leading to attainment of these learning standards.

The New York State Testing Program is designed to evaluate the implementation of the State’s Learning Standards at the student, school, district and State levels. To meet the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), tests in English language arts and mathematics are administered annually at each grade level in Grades 3 through 8. Parent's Guide to NY Tests, Grades 3-8 (PDF document) and 2010-11 Testing Schedule 3-8 schedule (PDF document). At the high school level, the New York State Regents Examinations are administered to in order to meet the NCLB standard using the schedule Regents Exam Schedule 2010-13 (PDF document).

The State Assessments serve as a measure of student progress. The Grades 3 through 8 tests provide information about the students’ preparedness for the next grade level, while the Regents examinations verify that students are prepared with the knowledge and skills necessary for high school graduation.

As New York State phases in new graduation requirements, educational demands differ from grade level to grade level. Guidance Counselors are available to meet with students and their parents to discuss these requirements and assist with course scheduling. Certain safety net provisions for some students are available.

Core Curriculum

English Language Arts

Language is the most powerful, most readily available tool we have for representing the world to ourselves and ourselves to the world. Language is not only a means of communication; it is a primary instrument of thought, a defining feature of culture, and an unmistakable mark of personal identity. The English Language Arts curriculum in Liberty Central School District expands upon the learning standards established by the New York State Department of Education. The four standards clearly show the interdependence of the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Standard 1: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for information and understanding.

Standard 2: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for literary response and expression.

Standard 3: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for critical analysis and evaluation.

Standard 4: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for social interaction.

Math

In March 2005, the Board of Regents adopted a new Learning Standard for Mathematics and issued a revised Mathematics Core Curriculum, resulting in the need for the development and phasing in of three new Regents Examinations in mathematics: Integrated Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2/Trigonometry. These new Regents Examinations in mathematics will replace the Regents Examinations in Mathematics A and Mathematics B. Students must pass any one of these new commencement-level Regents Examinations in order to fulfill the mathematics Regents Examination requirement for graduation. The first administration of the Regents Examination in Integrated Algebra took place in June 2008 and the first administration of the Regents Examination in Geometry took place in June 2009. The first administration of the Regents Examination in Algebra 2/ Trigonometry will take place in June 2010. The Regents Examination in Algebra2/Trigonometry will be based on the content of the Mathematics Core Curriculum (Revised 2005).

Social Studies

The Social Studies Learning Standards are defined as the knowledge, skills, and understandings that individuals habitually demonstrate over time as a consequence of instruction and experience. New York State has five specific content areas for standards:
• History of the United States and New York
• World History
• Geography
• Economics
• Civics, Citizenship, and Government

Taken together, these content standards, their key ideas and the performance indicators, define the Learning Standards for Social Studies for all students.

Science

Visit the New York State Education website, where you will find the resource guides with for the Science Curriculum for: elementary science, intermediate science, living environment, earth science, chemistry and physics.

Student Services/Special Education

Like all schools districts, students with disabilities are actively involved throughout the Liberty school community. They enjoy the same challenges and opportunities as their non-disabled peers. These students frequently receive additional services or participate in special programs to accommodate their disabilities while facilitating their success in school and life. Learn more
